Arena Calcetto: Design, Collaboration & Rivalry

Straight from 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale, the ensemble of Foosball tables (Arena Calcetto) that formed part of Australia’s exhibit are now back home as part of Sydney’s Art & About program & were officially launched over the weekend.

Launch in Sydney
Paddington Reservoir Gardens

Swapping the Venetian lagoon for the canopy of eucalyptus trees, the installation of tables are located within the Paddington Reservoir Gardens. Bringing the theme back home, the foosball tables are an example of an evolving alternate design practice & network, headed up by Archrival. The project brings together architects, designers and engineers outside of their direct roles & who would normally be commercial rivals, to collaborate and create these pieces.
Where the architects designed the scheme, the designers fabricated the multitude of foosball players in metal, resins & plastics; and the engineers saw that the tables and their towering masts all stood up.

The table invites people to interact with the exhibit, and in its nature puts people in friendly (or competitive) rivalry as they play a foosball tournament. At the Biennale it formed a metaphor for the rivalry within the architectural profession as well as that between the National Pavilion exhibits in the Giardini.
